The Panama Canal is surounded in great part by dense jungle. The Panama Canal Watershed has a surface of 552,761 hectares, approximately the size of the province of Herrera in the Republic of Panama. Its resources have the potential to meet the present and future water supply needs of most of the population of Panama and Panama Canal operations. The ecologic wealth of the Panama Canal Watershed constitutes an important part of its conservation. Some 70 species of amphibians, 112 species of reptiles and approximately 546 species birds, among then the toucan and the harpy eagle inhabit the jungle, and more than a hundred thousand species of trees grow there.
